Carpet Tile for Consumers
Carpet tiles have commonly been used in commercial environments for years. Businesses love the ease of installation and upkeep that using modular carpet systems provide them. Despite the fact that businesses of all types have found these tiles to be a tremendous value for their flooring needs, the average consumer has never adopted the use of this type of flooring in their personal homes. Some of the consumer reticence towards this product could be caused by the simple fact that carpet tiling is a non-traditional floor for home usage. Using non-traditional flooring, just like using a non-traditional color to paint the walls, can have dire consequences for the resale value of a home. From a home equity stand point, they may not be the best investment either. Certainly, using carpet tiles for bathroom ideas would be a bad idea as no one wants carpets in bathrooms!.
Another reason consumers have a tendency to avoid this type of carpet could be based upon perception. Tiling systems in the minds of many consumers are an inferior way to meet your home flooring needs. Many consumers believe that it looks cheap or simply too industrial. It could be viewed by some as a cheap short-cut being used to avoid the time and expense of putting in a real flooring material such as exotic plank hardwoods or the like. These perceptions, no matter what they are based on, lead to a possible diminished price in the sale of homes that feature carpet tiles as their main source of flooring.
While some of this consumer reluctance may be justified, much of it is unwarranted. Using carpet tile, much like using laminate, has circumstances that it is right for and others that it is not. What the consumer needs to be able to do is determine one from the other. First, the consumer should consider the advantages of using a modular carpet. One of the biggest advantages that come to mind is the simplicity of the installation. When using modular carpets, there is very little need to go out and hire a professional installer. Most consumers will be able to do a good install themselves. Very few tools are needed to install this type of carpet and the ones that are required are already owned by most people: a ruler, scissors and sharp knife for instance. Unlike regular carpet, there is no lengthy prep process the flooring must go through in order to lay the tiles. Carpet tile can be affixed to virtually any flooring surface. There is no need for additional glue, nails or stapling to keep the carpet into place. These tiles come with an adhesive back that you basically just have to lay on the ground. If the floor you are covering is something like hard wood, concrete, stone or ply wood, all you really need to do to prepare the surface is to make sure it is clean. This will ensure a strong adhesion between the carpet tile and the ground. Because the installation is so easy, the consumer can save a lot of money by making it a do-it-yourself project; this is especially true if you are carpeting a relatively small area.
Another reason why carpet tiles could be a good fit for some consumers is because they are extremely easy to replace. As mentioned above, installation of the squares is very simple. Likewise, the removal of the tiles is very easy. If one tile becomes damaged or stained it requires a very simple and fast procedure to pull it up and put a new one down. This can also be useful if you want to attempt a more in-depth cleaning of the tile using carpet steam cleaners. The ease of replacing tiles is just another way that the consumer will be able to extend the life of their carpet system making it an even better value. With traditional wall to wall carpeting, it is not a simple matter to replace a damaged section. It may require the entire carpet in the room to be replaced and will most likely require the help of a professional installer which drastically increases the cost.
When a consumer looks at a carpet tile, they don’t usually jump at the idea of installing them in their house, but the cost benefits that can be gained by a modular system might just make it worth the investment.
